Magnesium Benefits: What Is Proven, Promising and Overstated?

Claims that taking extra magnesium will improve sleep, anxiety, athletic performance, or other outcomes require separate evidence and should not be treated as equivalent to magnesium’s basic nutritional functions.
The Most Important Distinction: Essential Function vs Supplement Benefit
A nutrient can be essential without extra supplementation producing a measurable benefit in everyone. Magnesium illustrates this distinction clearly. The body requires magnesium; deficiency can cause problems. But people who already obtain enough magnesium do not automatically gain additional benefits from higher supplemental doses.
1. Muscle and Nerve Function
Magnesium participates in normal nerve signaling and muscle contraction. This is a core physiological role, not a marketing claim. Severe deficiency can lead to neuromuscular symptoms, but ordinary muscle soreness or cramps do not by themselves prove magnesium deficiency.
2. Energy Metabolism and Enzyme Function
